Our Favorite Outdoor Activities With Kids

In Big Family Tiny Living, thebhive family adventures, Uncategorized

Personally, Shiang-ling and  I think we have the most fun when our family is outside. There is just something about how we spend our time outside, the elements and the naturalness of it all comes together and makes lasting memories whether we’re on the objective side of a camera lens or not. Hiking – We have recently started hiking more. We’ve always wanted to go hiking, but we just never made time to do it or had the terrain for the most part. We aren’t talking trails either because we’d go on trail walks as a family all the time. What we were looking to do is to have some elevation change, put some miles on, play in an interesting area (i.e. waterfall, crevasse, span footbridge, etc…) not only for our sake, but for the physical, mental, and emotional growth of our children’s lives. Fishing – I used to fish…

A Kiss on top of MT Washington Auto Rd

Mt. Washington Sunrise Auto Ride | Sunday Funday

In thebhive family adventures, Uncategorized

This trip started out at midnight with a loud thunder and lightning storm over the top of us. It was down pouring when we got up to leave and got lucky the rain stopped just long enough to load everyone up without making a mess inside the car. It was a 2.5-hour drive to the gate of Mt. Washington’s Auto Road. When you get to the gate it’s another 20-30 minutes up the 8-mile winding road. The drive itself wasn’t too bad, albeit I didn’t drive, Johnny did. It was terrifying a few times. We did the Sunrise drive, which is only done 3 times a year, and it was pitch black, foggy and the road was consistently very close to the edge with very sharp/sudden turns. Reaching the summit we realized we were absolutely under-dressed and that we were all going to freeze. It was 45 degrees with a…

Revisiting Friendships New & Old | Heading North for the Summer!

In thebhive family adventures, Uncategorized

This past 5 weeks it feels like we time hopped. Traveling through 5 states and visiting with some new and some longtime friends. Hot Hot Georgia Starting out in Georgia, where we were celebrating with our friends Elissa & Cody, who just got married. We hung out with them for a week, made new friends and had a wonderful time! Back to Music City Tennessee Johnny and I were committed to speaking at and participate in the Tennessee Tiny House Festival June 1st & 2nd at Nissan Stadium. So, off we went traveling back up to Tennessee! It was great to get to hang out with this new found community of tiny/travel people! The kids bartered for haircuts, played with friends, ran mini businesses during the event and had an amazing time. After the Tiny house Festival, we needed to begin heading East towards Johnny’s graduation and subsequently our final…

Big Family Living Tiny | Tennesse Tiny House Festival!

In Big Family Tiny Living, thebhive family adventures, Uncategorized

Johnny and I spoke about being Big Family Living Tiny. I don’t know whats wrong with me but I get SUPER anxious about speaking… I know LOUD ole me get super nervous?! Well we started out with a smallish crowd but it quickly grew as we spoke about how we chose our bus, what we’ve found to be important for us as a big family and our life/family philosophies. We spoke from the heart and wanted to share truthfully how much fun we are having cutting free from the ‘societal norm” and doing US! Alexis wanted a clay magnet business a while ago. But… because business/marketing/branding is my jam, I started to become overbearing about how to run a business. I slowly stifled her creativity and desire to operate a business. I forgot that it was for her. On the way to the festival, she decided she wanted to make…

Wandering down to Georgia

In Big Family Tiny Living, thebhive family adventures, Uncategorized

Where is your sense of wonder? Do you still have it? Can you pull over to see something because you thought for a second “I wonder what that looks like?” Or purchase a random fruit/candy/thing just to try it? This past weekend we scooted on down to Georgia. Johnny’s reserve duty obligations ended sooner than we planned and now we had a 10-day gap in our plans. We were participating at the United Tiny House Association’s Tiny House Festival in Nashville, Tennessee on June 1st & 2nd, now what? Initially, we planned to head to Texas and attempt to finally “MOVE” there… but we didn’t think it’d be feasible in a 10- day window. After we nixed that I scrambled to find another place since it was Memorial Day weekend and apparently everyone and their grandmas go camping in Tennessee… EVERYTHING WAS BOOKED. I went pretty far East and West…

Enjoying & Exploring Nashville TN

In Big Family Tiny Living, thebhive family adventures, Uncategorized

Johnny and I are both lovers of the free-99 specials and keeping costs down. Especially when traveling to a large city like Nashville TN! It adds up quickly when you have a big family traveling and we prefer to spend our money on quality food (like damn good burgers from The Pharmacy), MUST see things and items that can serve us for a long run ( like the kid’s Wave kayaks). Outside of visiting the local Camping world, we really didn’t venture into Nashville TN the last time we were here. Johnny works for the reserves twice a year now since he was involuntarily separated. It’s a “sore’ subject but I am thankful that Johnny found a way to continue working towards his retirement. Where We Stayed In The Nashville Area When planning our trip to Nashville TN, we had this idea that when we first arrived we’d stay at…

Our Family Christmas Letter

In thebhive family adventures, Uncategorized

Our version of a family Christmas letter. This post contains affiliate links. Dear World, We hope this “letter” finds you and your family well. I am pretty sure we all feel like 2018 came and left and we are still trying to figure out what happened. We are currently “residing at Johnny’s parent’s side yard”. Its good, we laugh because we never imagined ourselves here. They know that we don’t want to be living there but that we appreciate the yard and hospitality to finish out our build. It’s been enjoyable, this is the longest that we’ve been back in our childhood hometown in 13 years. THIRTEEN YEARS! We’ve been here for a month. Its been fast too, there are just so many people to see and spend time together its been a challenge finding balance in the work/play part of our life. We’ve been in a staycation mode, slower to rise and just more…

How We Went Tiny

In thebhive family adventures, Uncategorized

I am NOT a hoarder… if you ask my husband he’d say I am but I am clearly stating it now, I AM NOT A HOARDER.   I just like things. He’s always lived minimally. Growing up in a family of 13, he just didn’t have a lot. Plus he’s just never cared for material items. On the other hand, I am one of two kids, artsy and love trinkets and collecting different kinds of bottles. If it has a solid memory attached to it, I’d probably keep it.   (Hello, I still had a Ruby Tuesdays coaster from one of our dates in HIGHSCHOOL).   But I have gotten better over the years, the last move into this house I was already wanting to go tiny and got rid of a BUNCH of unnecessary things. But now we’ve moved into 320 sq ft and there just isn’t much room,…

Week One of Skoolie LIfe

In thebhive family adventures

Man Oh Man… I never thought I’d admit that we have so many things.   Late afternoon last Tuesday, we determined it was too late to leave. We still had a ton of things to finish before we could even pack everything out. So we decided to work on as many things as we could and travel fresh in the morning. I mean who wants to start a long journey after building all day? ( I totally would and suffer, but Johnny is more practical … and the only driver). We worked on mounting the grey water tanks for travel, building the under desk shelves, the closet and a few other shelving units for additional storage. You can see some BHTS on Youtube. Even though we are not 100% converted, the space is liveable. I’d say we are 65% done with the conversion; still needing larger items like solar, wiring…

T-Minus 12 days till Skoolie Life begins!

In Our Skoolie Conversion, thebhive family adventures, Uncategorized

ex·haust·ed: drained of one’s physical or mental resources; very tired. I’ve written and rewritten this post four times now. Each time was to correct the timeline in which we are leaving. This time… this time I am blogging from my ½ completed skoolie desk and I am thrilled. We leave in 13 days and I am starting to get mixed feelings about it. I’ll write more about that in another post… cause right now I just can’t.   We were racing against multiple clocks: the race between the house sale, leaving for Johnny’s reserve duty obligation and completing the school bus conversion. Hurricane Florence hijacked our timeline to close on the sale of the house, and while it gave us more time to be stationary and work on getting our skoolie conversion closer to completion, it messed up some important plans which, hindsight always being 20/20, we’re thankful our house,…
